People will normally start to conduct research about gout after they have suffered an attack. They suffer a lot of pain in an attack and are looking for ways to stop this from happening. It is not long before the research tells them that the cause of the pain is their diet.
So the usual cry is “I have gout what can I eat?” or they will mention their favorite foods and ask if they are ok to eat, can I eat eggs if I have gout, or cantaloupes or pork? It is easy to get tied up in your few favorite foods and forget to look at the bigger picture.
As the pain that a gout attack causes get worse, you will no doubt be thinking about how on earth to stop the pain. Aside from the common treatments that are available to relieve pain for the short term, you should be thinking more about how you can take steps to prevent the pain in the future. One of these steps involves your diet.
You need to start thinking about the long term solutions to your gout and the pain you are suffering as a result of it. Yes short term remedies are fine at first, but the real pain is caused by a build up of uric acid crystals in the joints. This can be solved by taking some steps to help in the long term, such as watching your diet and eating the correct foods.
Curing your gout is not a matter of changing your eating habits for a while, like anything that affects your health you need to make a conscious decision to change for the better for ever not just for now.
So what lifestyle changes should you be making right now to prevent another gout attack? Get a small pocket diary and make a note of everything you eat and drink for the next two weeks, this means you can look at your diet with certainty rather than thinking you eat to much of this and not enough of that. Two weeks is a good amount of time as it allows you to stop trying to be good and only eat salads so the diary looks good.
You should avoid foods that are high in purines and that is what allows your body to make the uric acid that crystallizes and causes your gout. So the first thing you need to do is cut items that contain this out of your diet.
After two weeks of keeping a record of your food intake, use it for another two weeks but this time highlight where you have managed to cut down on the bad foods. Concentrate on one thing at a time, once you have cut one thing down, move onto something else. After a while you should see a reduction in your gout problems. Also increase your water intake at the same time. Are you wondering if there are any food types which will actually help with your gout?

Symptoms of Gout

The condition known as gout will normally take several years to form before a person starts to suffer from it. This is because the uric acid crystals need time to build up in a person’s joints and the tissue surrounding it before gout symptoms and signs begin to show.
The most common types of symptoms that a person will suffer from when they have gout are as follows:-
1. The most common form of gout starts as what is known as podagra usually. This refers to pain in the big toe joint when it is inflamed from the build up of uric acid.
2. No one who hasn’t had a gout attack start at bedtime can believe how much pain can come just from the brushing of your partners foot against the infected joint, normally your big toe.
3.Some gout sufferers will have an attack that comes on quickly and lasts many hours. After the initial pain, which can be very intense, the level drops over the next 2 days to a week.
4. After your attack of gout has started to subside you may find that the skin around the inflamed joint will feel itchy and it may even begin to peel.
The above are just some of the symptoms that people with gout may have. Not everyone who suffers with the above will have gout and not every gout sufferer will suffer with all (or any) of these symptoms.
While it is usually your big toe joint that suffers the effects of gout , which of course makes walking very painful, you can also get it in any joint in your body. This includes your fingers, elbows, ankles and even your wrists.
Gout can attack after an illness or surgery, to make it even worse it can often be missed and just treated as another ache or pain from the surgery or illness. Older people seem to suffer this misdiagnose more than others.
If you or someone you know starts to have any of the symptoms we have mentioned here it is vital that they go to see a DR. While the initial pain may dissipate after a few days it will come back , and may be much worse the next time, unless they take proper medication.
